Eye Donation Month is held each November to help bring awareness to the importance of eye donation. All month long, Miracles In Sight, (with the help of the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA)) will help generate awareness about the need for eye donation, common misconceptions about the process, and life-changing opportunities that are created when recipients regain their sight through corneal transplants. This year, the theme is “A Community of Compassion”– the many people working together in various roles, driven by collective passion to #restoresight. The intention is to inspire individuals to register as donors, and highlight the mission of EBAA member eye banks to #restoresight worldwide.
Each year, millions of lives are transformed through corneal donation and transplantation. In 2019, 51,336 corneas were provided for transplant with a 95-98 percent success rate, providing $6+ billion in lifetime economic benefit for the recipients. During the 2019 fiscal year, Miracles In Sight provided corneal tissues to 3,349 transplant recipients throughout the world, thanks to selfless gifts from eye donors and their families.
